Switzerland is the common name for the area in Northwest St. Johns County a few miles south of Julington Creek Plantation and is situated along the eastern banks of the St. Johns River (across from Green Cove Springs and Middleburg in Clay County). Switzerland got its name from Francis Fatio, a Spaniard, who was successful in planting over 10,000 acres of fruit plantation in the late 1700’s. He named the area “New Switzerland” but the “New” was later dropped.
Switzerland has many beautiful natural characteristics with its large draping oak trees, sandy ravines along the river, and many acres of mature pine forests. The area was predominantly rural until the very early 2000’s when new developments began to emerge but is still a very quaint area. One of the jewels of Switzerland is Alpine Groves Park. This riverfront park is home to smaller concerts, art shows, and a Farmer’s Market, which is open every Saturday.
Switzerland is home to the best school system in the state of Florida and one of the best in the nation. Switzerland is also part of the Census District of “St. Johns” which also includes Fruit Cove and Julington Creek. Upscale overall, the St. Johns community supports many golf courses, retail shops, boutiques, and mansions, along with protected marshlands and protected wetlands that draw visitors and intrigue residents.
