Fruit Cove is the common name for the area in Northwest St. Johns County immediately south and west of Julington Creek Plantation and is situated along the eastern banks of the St. Johns River (across from Green Cove Springs and Middleburg in Clay County). Fruit Cove is not only the fastest growing place in the state, it is known as the most affordable suburb for Florida living. Even though it is part of a larger upscale community, it is relatively affordable.
Fruit Cove has actually been a travel hot spot since the 1700s when Mr. William Bartram arrived in the area with father in 1765 to study the plant life. William wished to become a planter of local crops, but could not succeed and left the region. However, he came back in 1774 and wrote a book about his journey that the called Travels. The local high school, Bartram Trail, is named in his honor today.
Fruit Cove has many beautiful natural characteristics with its large draping oak trees and many acres of mature pine forests. The area was predominantly rural until the late 1990’s when new developments began to emerge but is still a very quaint area.
Fruit Cove is home to the best school system in the state of Florida and one of the best in the nation. Fruit Cove is also part of the Census District of “St. Johns” which also includes Switzerland and Julington Creek. Upscale overall, the St. Johns community supports many golf courses, retail shops, boutiques, and mansions, along with protected marshlands and protected wetlands that draw visitors and intrigue residents.
